INAUGURATION DINNER FOR THE BENEFIT OF DISABLE CHILDREN
DEAF AND BLIND CHILDREN’S SCHOOL IN KANDY SRI LANKA
Project; Deaf and Blind School in Kandy Sri Lanka.
Brief information on the Deaf and Blind school
The Senkadagala Deaf & Blind School in Kandy, Sri Lanka was founded in 1962. The School in Kandy is a boarding school and the children who attend it come from every part of the country.
Over the years the Senkadagala School has helped numerous disabled children from 5 to 18 years old. There are now 120 children at the school, of whom almost 100 are boarders who live in a hostel during term time. The school hostel provides food and accommodation free of charge as most of the children come from very poor families in rural parts of the country.
Education Under the guidance of specially trained teachers the children follow the normal curriculum. The school has two sections: One is for blind children, who are taught in braille; in the other, deaf children are taught in sign language and lip reading. The children are taught a wide variety of subjects and skills with which they can become self-supporting in society. The IPS funds are being used to improve the children’s education and health- hygiene and living conditions in the hostel.
